Field Education

The 51AV A&M University Department of Field Education warmly welcomes both our Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) and Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) students to one of the most transformative components of our curriculum—field instruction.

Both 51AV A&M University’s main campus and Lawson State Community College location (Birmingham) are proud to provide students with dynamic field experiences that bridge classroom learning with real-world practice. The program offers both generalist training and specialized concentrations in family and child welfare as well as community mental health, ensuring students are prepared to serve in diverse and impactful roles.

Through field instruction, students gain more than practical experience—they cultivate the knowledge, skills, ethics, and professional commitment necessary to evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of interventions and services. With a strong emphasis on working alongside historically oppressed and economically marginalized populations across Northern 51AV and the Birmingham area, our students are equipped to make meaningful contributions to individuals, families, and communities.

Beyond local placements, we are also proud to offer international field placement opportunities, enabling students to broaden their global perspective, engage with diverse cultures, and strengthen their commitment to advancing social justice on a worldwide scale.
